Japan Upgrades Girl Guides Association

19 November 2012 Japan handed over a grassroots project to upgrade the Girl Guides Association of the Kingdom of Tonga on Monday, November 19.

The handover ceremony of the project was held at the Girl Guides headquarter, "Tautavale" in Nuku'alofa. His Excellency, Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga attended the handover ceremony. The Honourable Halaevalu Moheofo Tuita, representing Her Majesty Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho, the Queen Mother and Royal Patron of Girl Guides Association, was guest of honour at the handover ceremony which also commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Girl Guides in Tonga.? Hon. Sosefo Vakata, Minister for Revenue, and Hon. Sangstar Saulala, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries, also attended the ceremony.

His Excellency Dr. Hamuro congratulated the completion of the project and appraised the efforts made by partners of the project.? In his speech, His Excellency Dr. Hamuro emphasized that girls and young female students succeed a leadership role of Tongan women in the near future and expand the horizon, overcoming a traditional perception of what and how women should be in the society, taking a leadership role more actively and confidently. ??The keynote address from Hon. Halaevalu Moheofo expressed appreciation on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, and encourages members of the Girl Guides Association to use facilities properly.

The project is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan.? The Girl Guides Association faced a problem of ?deteriorating facility thus the Association sought for Japan's assistance in 2011 prioritizing provision of a safer environment for participants of the Association's activities. The project financed construction of a new training centre which replaced an old facility build more than 25years ago.

Since the inception of the 2003 Japan's Official Development Assistance Charter, Japan has made further efforts to improve the status of women, giving full consideration to the active participation of women in development, and to ensuring that women reap benefits from development.?? The project to upgrade the facility is such part of Japan's efforts and, therefore, to strengthen the friendly relationship between the People of Japan and Tonga.
