In a Colonial Athletic League regular season finale in Marlborough on Friday night, Assabet senior running back Paul Harpin ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, eclipsing 1,500 yards rushing for the season, as the Aztecs routed Keefe Tech 35-8 to clinch a spot in the postseason.
Assabet improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the CAL and earned the fourth and final playoff spot in CMass Division 6 behind league rivals Bay Path and Valley Tech, and also Littleton.
"We?ve made the playoffs for the third time in the last four years and that?s pretty impressive for our program," said Assabet coach Rob McCann. "I am very happy about it."
A year ago the Div. 6 playoffs, the Aztecs fell 38-34 in a Super Bowl shootout with Bay Path. Assabet lost 58-24 to Oakmont in the CMass Div. 3 playoffs in 2009 and did not make the postseason in 2010.
Keefe capped the scoring in Friday?s game when Kyle Smith ran for an 8-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Ryan Hanson kicked the PAT as the Broncos finished the year 0-11, 0-7 in the CAL.
Assabet?s senior Chris Schofield opened the scoring on a 70-yard TD run and Harpin ran it in from 46 yards out to give the Aztecs a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
Schofield finished with 75 yards rushing on four carries.
Senior Jason Torrez scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make it 21-0 at the half.
Austin DuVarney scored on a 46-yard interception return in the third quarter for a 28-0 Assabet lead entering the fourth. C.J. Gleason ran in from 5 yards out in the fourth for the Aztecs.
Placekicker Raphael Nery was automatic, going 5-for-5 on extra points.
