ROCK HILL Surgeons will attach ?things? in Kenny Allen?s head he says are shaped like ?kidney beans.?
?Because I?m bald,? doctors will inject a balloon-stretch apparatus filled with a saline solution into his scalp to expand the hair tissue in the Rock Hill boy?s head so it?ll enclose a thin layer of skin made bare from the teeth of a 2-year-old pit bull six months ago.
The surgery, which forces the Allen family to haul several bags and suitcases filled with Kenny?s clothes to a Charlotte hospital at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, is the first of many doctors hope will restore the hair on the 12-year-old boy?s scalp.
After the balloon?s installed, it?ll have to be pumped with the solution every week for the next several years, said his mother, Becki Allen. Eventually, it?s a process the Allen family will be able to do from home.
Nevertheless, the 12-year-old Rock Hill boy is reluctant.
?I don?t want to have to do it,? he said.
?He says he?s perfectly fine the way he is,? Becki Allen said.
His bald spot, surrounded by a bundle of light brown hair, ?makes me look like Friar Tuck from ?Robin Hood,?? he said.
And, like a character from tales of ?Robin Hood,? Kenny jumped from chairs, ran in and out of the house and performed flips that many thought would be nearly impossible months ago.
?Kenny?s in good spirits,? Kenneth Allen said at the family?s Ridgecrest Road home. ?He?s happy all the time.?
Attacked by neighbor?s dog
On May 30, Kenny, then 11, walked over to a neighbor?s house to borrow a blender. When he arrived in the yard, Dallas, a pit bull mix its owner said had never been aggressive, jumped at Kenny, lodging its teeth into the back of his head.
Kenny managed to free himself and ran home. His father and several neighbors helped Kenny apply pressure to the wound while they waited for an ambulance.
Four inches of Kenny?s scalp was gone.
He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he underwent six hours of surgery. Doctors tried to reattach his scalp. It didn?t work.
So doctors began a comprehensive skin grafting and reconstruction process they expect will continue for the next several years.
Wednesday is just another step.
In the meantime, the seventh-grade Saluda Trail Middle School student holds no qualms about his appearance.
For Halloween, he wore the hockey mask of Jason, the mass-murdering psycho with a disfigured head from the ?Friday the 13th? movies.
?We could hear teenagers say, ?Man his head is cool,?? Becki Allen said laughing. ?They couldn?t figure out how we go this head to look like that.?
?Go get attacked by a pit bull kids and stay in school,? Kenny suggested.
His family laughed.
?He is so funny,? said his grandmother, Sue Wilson, who with her husband, Jim, traveled from Florida for Kenny?s surgery. They plan to stay in town till after Thanksgiving.
At their Florida home, the Wilsons have planted gardens for all eight of their grandchildren. Kenny?s is a turtle garden and it?s almost finished, Sue Wilson said.
Noting her grandson?s intelligence, she remembered when he was only several months old and stayed away from a bottle, choosing to use a cup to drink like the big kids.
Years later, Kenny takes advanced classes and calls himself the ?smartest kid? in his history class. He plans to go to Harvard University.
At school, he plays soccer with friends.
He doesn?t fret about missing weeks of school. He?s already cleaned out his locker, and wants doctors to extend his three-day stay in the hospital to at least a week ?for observation.? A teacher will meet with him at home while he?s recovering.
?He?s starting to go places,? Becki Allen said, adding that her son?s slowly overcoming his fear of most dogs.
But not all dogs.
The Allen family went to Food Lion recently, Becki Allen said, where they saw a dog that frightened Kenny. Dogs that bark from car windows when their owners leave them in store parking lots make him nervous.
He reads the newspaper in his journalism class and started watching ?Fox News Rising? as a toddler. He keeps up with the weather.
?It?s a 30 percent chance it?s already raining,? he said as a slow drizzle started outside.
Big wrestling fan
Yet, it?s wrestling that?ll get him going for hours on end.
He sat on his couch and played a World Wrestling Entertainment video game while maintaining a conversation with Casey Moore, his aunt, about bonsai trees and broken guitars. He also insisted that his father had just hours before tried to run a wild turkey off the road on the way home from the doctor?s office.
?I love you man, but it was a buzzard,? Kenneth Allen said smiling.
Since the attack, community support has swelled for the Allen family, who lost Kenny?s paternal grandmother the week of the dog attack. A week before the attack, Kenneth Allen suffered a heart attack. The family had also purchased a new car. A week didn?t pass before someone slammed into it.
Yard sales and community wrestling matches have lifted their spirits. Critics who call Kenny a ?whiner? hurt his feelings.
After learning of Kenny?s story, WWE officials sent one of their biggest fans ? he thinks so, at least ? memorabilia that included action figures, books, magazines and autographed posters.
Two weeks ago, he attended a WWE match in Charlotte, where he sat in seats designated for handicapped customers and watched CM Punk hit Ryback ?in the wrong place.?
Kenny can sound off WWE stats from well before his birth. Camping out in his family?s living room while his bedroom is remodeled for his post-surgery recovery, Kenny flipped through a WWE companion book, finding ?quotes? and pointing at black-and-white pictures of men and women clad in tights.
His grandfather, Jim Wilson, joined him in trading trivia about Sid Vicious and other wrestlers.
?Papa knows everybody,? Kenny said about Wilson.
?Ric Flair?s the champion,? Kenneth Allen said.
Kenny, the WWE expert, was quick to correct him: ?No, he?s not.?

MENTOR, Ohio ? A crowd of silent strangers look in all directions, waiting patiently for one man and the pitter-patter of little feet.
?Do you know what they look like?? asked Tonya Ross, organizing the crowd.
?Oh no,? said the woman next to her.
?It?s exciting. We?ll know them when it happens.?
They may not know Daniel Lewis personally, but when he walked toward the crowd, cheers erupted and cameras clicked.
Lewis, a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, was being recognized by Sears through the ?Heroes at Home? program.
?My heart started beating,? said Sgt. Lewis. ?I?ve been in combat, but I?m a little more nervous about this for some reason.?
The Heroes at Home Wish Registry reaches out to families of those who?ve served,? said Nina Skiba, Sears Store operations manager at the Great Lakes Shopping Center.
?The program?s been with us for five years,? Skiba said. ?It?s raised $17 million and helped 83,000 military families. Such a great program. Feels so good to do this.?
Late Monday morning, the store presented Lewis and his family several home appliances and a $500 gift card for his service, which has spanned over the past 15 years.
Lewis joined the Marines in 1997, and eventually served in the Army, following the footsteps of his late father. He?s been deployed overseas six times, which has taken a toll on his family.
?The gifts? I think my family deserves it,? he said. ?They?re just as big a part of it as I am. I?m just doing my job. As clich? as it sounds, that?s what I signed up for. I don?t feel like I deserve anything.?
The military has separated Lewis from his Painesville family, including missing the first year of his youngest child?s life. Lewis has six little girls, ranging from 2 to 12 years old. He and his wife, Michelle, are expecting a boy by next year.
After returning from Iraq this past year, Lewis has struggled to find work. He commutes between the Army barracks in Maryland
But, all the gifts this year, Lewis hopes to find permanent work, so he can be close to his loved ones, especially for the holidays.
?I?ve been unemployed. I?ve been homeless. If anything, it made my family stronger,? Lewis said. ?Thank you?s not even? I mean how do you describe that. I?m completely overwhelmed. Like I said, I don?t deserve this. Just thank you guys so much.?
The Heroes at Home program is collecting donations until Friday, Nov. 16.

DOHA/CAIRO (Reuters) - Syria's newly named opposition leader, a soft-spoken cleric backed by Washington and the Gulf Arab states, launched his quest on Monday for international recognition of a government-in-waiting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.
Mouaz Alkhatib, a former imam of a Damascus mosque, flew to Cairo to seek the Arab League's blessing for a new assembly, the day after he was unanimously elected to lead it. He made a concerted effort to address the sectarian and ethnic acrimony underlying 20 months of civil war that has killed 38,000 people.
"We demand freedom for every Sunni, Alawi, Ismaili, Christian, Druze, Assyrian ... and rights for all parts of the harmonious Syrian people," he said, calling on Syrian soldiers to desert and all sects to unite.
His new Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces received the endorsement of the six Sunni Muslim-ruled kingdoms of the Gulf Cooperation Council as the "legitimate representative of the Syrian people".
Washington also promised to back the new body "as it charts a course toward the end of Assad's bloody rule and the start of the peaceful, just, democratic future".
In signs of the serious danger of the 20-month conflict spreading across the region, Monday saw a surge of violence at two frontiers. Israel fired shells from across the line separating Syria from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, while Syrian warplanes bombed a rebel-held town on the Turkish border.
Rebels and opposition politicians formed Alkhatib's new opposition coalition after days of wrangling in Qatar under intense U.S. and Qatari pressure.
Backers hope the new body will give rebels inside Syria more clout and reassure religious and ethnic minorities, after a Syrian National Council (SNC) made up mainly of exiled Islamists proved ineffective as the main opposition voice.
Western and Arab opponents of Assad want the coalition to attract support from minority sects who had been alienated from the opposition by the prominence of well-organised Sunnis from the Muslim Brotherhood. They also hope to rein in Islamist fighters, some of whom they believe are linked to al Qaeda.
"Alkhatib is a dynamic, progressive Islamist, popular in Damascus and the rest of Syria," said Mazen Adi, a prominent Syrian human rights defender who worked with Alkhatib before the revolt. "He is not a trigger-happy Jihadist, and he can play a role in containing the extremist groups."
ARAB LEAGUE BACKING SOUGHT
Alkhatib met Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby before the gathering of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo. European foreign ministers are due to join them on Tuesday.
"The most important thing that could come out from (Monday's) meeting is a form of recognition for the new Syrian council alliance that was established in Doha," said one Arab diplomat, speaking before the talks on condition of anonymity.
A League official said any recognition of the opposition would probably avoid describing it as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people, because some Arab states were still reluctant to jettison Assad altogether.
"There are still Arab states like Iraq and Lebanon that are not fully supportive of the Syrian revolt," the official said, also on condition he not be identified.
Alkhatib, in his early 50s, was jailed several times for criticizing Assad before fleeing into exile this year. He has long promoted a liberal Islam tolerant of Syria's Christian, Alawite and other minorities.
Hassan Hassan, a Syrian commentator based in the United Arab Emirates, said Alkhatib, as an independent cleric, would be a counterweight to growing influence of the Muslim Brotherhood.
"He's been active for a long time, campaigning against the idea of retribution and extremism. He talks about liberty and freedom for the masses. So he is perceived as a credible figure," Hassan said.
Russia, which with China has foiled U.N. action on Syria and views Assad's opponents as pawns of the West, urged the new body to negotiate and to reject outside meddling.
Asked if China recognized the new coalition, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei called on all parties to initiate "a political transition process guided by the Syrian people".
BORDER BOMBING
The escalation of violence over 20 months in a country allied to Iran and bordering Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, has raised the prospect of wider regional war.
Israeli tanks fired shells into Syria and scored "direct hits" in response to a Syrian mortar round that struck the Golan Heights, the Israeli military said.
It was the second time in two days that Israel has responded to what it said was errant Syrian fire. On Sunday the military said it had a fired a "warning shot" across the disengagement line, while on Monday it said it had fired back at "the source".
Syria and Israel have not fought over the Golan since the 1973 Middle East conflict, but are still formally at war. Israel captured the Golan from Syria in 1967 and later annexed it in a move not recognized internationally.
At the northern end of Syria, government jets and helicopters attacked the rebel-held town of Ras al-Ain, with some bombs landing just meters (yards) from the Turkish border, sending scores of civilians fleeing into Turkey.
A Reuters reporter on the border near the town, which fell to the rebels on Thursday, said one warplane flew right along the frontier and appeared to stray across it at one point, as bombs sent up plumes of black smoke.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition group that tracks the violence from Britain, said 12 people, including seven Islamist militants, had been killed in strikes on Ras al-Ain. Another opposition group put the toll at 16.
The Observatory said 140 people were killed in Syria on Sunday. More than 38,000 people have died since March last year.
Turkey, whose border security worries were heightened by a sudden influx of 9,000 refugees within 24 hours last week, has consulted its NATO allies about possibly deploying Patriot surface-to-air missiles to deter Syria's air force.
It remains to be seen whether the Coalition can succeed where the exiled SNC failed in overcoming mutual suspicion and in-fighting that weakened the opposition.
"This is a significant step forward, because they finally seem to be forging a more broadly-based platform that includes the SNC but without the SNC taking the lion's share," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Doha Brookings Center think tank.
